Claygate is a suburban village in Surrey, 13 miles southwest of central London. It is largely residential and has a small number of offices, outlying farms and two small shopping areas, the Old Village and the Parade, with hair and beauty shops, a supermarket, five pubs and a number of restaurants.
Claygate’s entry into the modern world can be linked to the opening of its railway station in 1885, with housing development following on an organised basis. This was initially as a result of activity by the Hon Fitzalan Foley, whose new estate become popular in the 20th century with London commuters. In the first half of the 20th century, large areas of farmland and mansion sites were used for housing development, with further sites being provided after the brickworks closed in the 1960s. While Claygate is now densely developed with a wide range of housing and some office buildings, it remains largely surrounded by farmland that is protected by the Metropolitan Green Belt.
